A while back my husband showed me a photograph of the doomed liner Titanic sitting tragically, but proudly on the deep Ocean floor, He pointed out these long Flower like trails, seeming to drip like Candle wax down the sides of the once solid, enormous, imperial  Ship . He said these were Rusticles, a reaction of Bacteria and Iron Oxide, which is causing the great ship to literally “melt away”

The photograph haunted me. Its poetic beauty of a faded dynasty reminded me of the Venetian Gothic in Venice, and the Neo Classical architecture in Aix-en- Provence. Symbols of transience, and mortality. Nothing is for ever despite its delusion to beauty and perhaps power.

I am attracted to natural corrosion in the details of architecture, which I do not see as decay, but a form of organic development.  A worn stone has in it the thumb print of the Architect, the builder, and all those who came into contact,In short there is an intimate and far reaching record in one small architectural detail. Venice is a source of inspiration for this work along with Aix-en-Provence. Both places are exposed to the elements, like wind,  the sun bleaching and wearing surfaces peeling back history .

I am developing techniques to describe this. Some involve allowing etching plates to corrode, then using the rusty surface to print onto paper or porcelain. I then allow the surface to continue to corrode, as part of the work.

Collographs printed onto re-cycled paper, or paper porcelain describe the layers of plaster, wood, and wrought iron work . The finished relief is architectural in its own right. Some are fine and fragile, presented as museum relics, boxed by frames, or mounted on slate to accentuate the architectural nature

Ophelia

This is me with my daughter Ophelia inside the Curwen show only 4 months old. This is a lovely memory of sharing my first solo exhibition in London and Ophelia’s first art show
