On a stormy day near the Chateau de Chillon in Montreux, Switzerland, where I was working at the time, a twisted ugly branch, half submerged, incongruous with its picture postcard surroundings, caught my eye.

Two contorted forms in conflict.

It became an obsession, a focus for my work. I confronted my dark side through this anthropomorphic spectre, which I brought back to my flat and lived with, for the next 24 years, until in 2011, I ritualistically burnt it in the garden.
