LIFE DRAWINGS AND SKETCHBOOK PAGES

Sketchbooks

Sketchbooks are really important to me, and are diaries, so evocative. I remember where I am, what time of day and often what is going on in my life at the time. They are always in a bag with my drawing and painting kit, ready to go. I have made my own in various sizes using different papers. I have many small Moleskin watercolour sketchbooks full of seascapes, and records of moments in the day, and I often get up early at dawn to record the morning in colour.

Life Drawing

Life drawing is an absorbing activity, working against the clock, either using very quick poses, 1min, 5mins, or an extended pose over weeks. It’s rewarding, and really develops observation in a controlled environment.

This hand-cut paper stencil cut directly on to newsprint from the model, was screen printed in two colours, alongside students to encourage them to take risks, work quickly and have fun making work which isn’t too precious. It encourages experimentation and creates confidence.
